David Humphreys was born in 1937 in London of a Welsh father and a Scottish mother. From 1958 to 1962 he studied Fine Art at Durham University Fine Art Department under Victor Pasmore;
Statement: The landscapes of Wales and Scotland hold a fascination for David Humphreys, who returns there again and again to paint, influenced by his Welsh father and Scottish mother. Hebridean island life in particular inspires him: “You don’t live on the islands unless you want to,” he says. “That’s what distinguishes them from the rest of Britain.” Although faithful to the spirit of a place, he enjoys “the megalomania of the artist, being able to remove whole headlands with one sweep of the brush” (quoted from www.countrylivingfair.com).
Teaching Experience: 1962-3 taught in schools for physically handicapped children in London; 1963-69 lecturer at Ravensbourne College of Art & Design;
Awards: 1958 Thomas Pennman Scholarship & State Scholarship; 1983 1st prize 'Small Paintings Show', Salisbury Arts Centre;
