Magan Jones was born in 1936 in Crynant, South Wales. From 1952 to 1957 she studied Fine Art at the Swansea College of Art. She works from her studio at Ystradgynlais in the Swansea Valley; mentor: Alfred Janes
Megan Jones' response to subject matter is expressed in strong colour, with a sure sense of rhythm and structure, evoking a sense of place altered by light and time (quoted, by kind permission of the artist, from a leaflet to the exhibition 'Visual Arts' at Neath Port Talbot).
"The study of landscape has numerous levels that may be approached separately, but always 'overlap', one aspect touching another. There are three elements, i.e. subject and self, the third being medium. I usually mix media - oils with pastel, gouache over collage papers with charcoal, conte with water based paints, gouache and household emulsions and other combinations - even using cosmetics on old envelopes! Along with this I draw regularly with charcoal, charcoal pencil or soft graphite. Recent works have been composed of collage paper, plastic and found natural materials such as grass and feathers." (quoted by permission of the editor of 'Revelations' 2000/1, p.34).
