. Catrin Williams

Catrin Williams, now based in the seaside town of Pwllheli, was born in 1966 on a hill farm near Bala/North Wales where she was brough up and where she was involved in the day to day activities of a lively Welsh speaking community; she enjoyed drama, singing, art and performing in local eisteddfodau.
After an Arts Foundation course at Bangor Technical College, she studied Fine Art at the Institute of Higher Education, Cardiff's Art College from 1986 to 1989 (BA.hons). In 1990 she received a grant visiting France the Czech Republic and Germany with the rock group Yr Anhrefn, painting the group on stage while performing. In 1991 she won 2nd prize in the fine art competition at the Natonal Eisteddfod.

Catrin Williams' influences have always been her rural upbringing and traditional Welsh culture. Her energetic and colourful style results in certain personal emotions becoming an integral part of the landscape of the finished paintings. She works mainly with pastels, textiles and a range of other materials in her multi-media work. Her themes are inspired both by the countryside where she was brought up and by the coast. Catrin's aim is to share her own experiences with fabrics and paints and help young people express their ideas through learning skills handed down to them from history. She is particularly keen to engage young people from a local estate, in the town of Pwllheli, and teach them about what were once traditional Welsh skills, but have now been largely forgotten.

Catrin’s work has been exhibited throughout Wales as well as in London, Scotland and Ireland and she has appeared on a number of television programmes. Earlier this year her work was highly commended by Sir Kyffin Williams, William Selwyn Jones and Peter Prendegast in Young Wales 5 at the Royal Cambrian Academy, Conwy.
