Calligraphic Work
by
Kathryn Dodd
(formerly Hinks)

from 1988 to 2002

Artist's statement: "I am a painter who writes words and incorporates them into the surface of my work, a shifting identity tracking a faceted career that has encompassed graphic design, lettering, teaching, writing and painting. It's about the agency of words, the naming of things as the glue that holds our perception of our world intact - my work broadly explores notions of identity, fragmentation, 'ontological' security (a term used by the controversial psychologist R.D. Laing) and the assimilation of loss. My first calligraphy teacher imbued me with the Welsh spirit of David Jones - spiritual words holding the page as art. I came to life under the tutelage of Brody Neunenschwander and then Anne Hechle who both understood that calligraphy was only part of the story for me. In the lettering world I pay homage to Donald Jackson, Denis Brown, Thomas Ingmire and Werner Schneider who have all opened my eyes" (October, 2002).
