Lowri Fretwell
Lowri Fretwell is a young artist from Penygroes in the Nantlle Valley (born c.1982). A former pupil of Ysgol Dyffryn Nantlle, she developed her interest in art during a year's Foundation Course at Coleg Menai Bangor, before gaining a place at the University Wales Institute, Cardiff, where she studied Fine Art. She graduated in 2005, having specialized in printing work, and one of her degree showcase pieces was chosen for the new Senedd in Cardiff. It now adorns the Office of Alun Pugh AC, Minister of Culture, Sport and the Welsh Language.
Lowri's graduation work was mainly inspired by family and family roots. Lowri's grandmother died during a period when Britain as a whole was commemorating the end Second World War. Whilst reading personal letters sent by her grandfather during the war, Lowri tried to imagine what life was like for her grandmother during those turbulent times, as she waited for news from her loved one.
Most of Lowri's work is in the form of screen prints, but she has also created multi media work and enjoyed experimenting by printing on a variety of surfaces (quoted from S4C's programme Sioe Gelf of May 2006: http://www.celfcymru.com/sioegelf/index.php?page=69d6e8f3&cat=81&lang=2)
