John Uzzell Edwards was born in 1937 in Deri, the Rhymney Valley, South Wales. According to him, he acquainted himself with Fine Art in the 1950s 'by avoiding art colleges'. Between 1962 and 1970 he had a studio and art gallery in Merthyr Tydfil and Tenby. Now he has his studio in Swansea; he is a founder member of Ysbryd/Spirit Wales.

Artist's Statement: In my paintings I go right back to my Celtic roots for inspiration, which results in strong, highly colourful images.

Awards: 1965/6 Granada Arts Fellow at the University of York; 1969 at the British School in Rome where he was awarded the Prix de Rome, also awarded the Leverhulme European Research Fellowship; 1972 winner of the Images of Wales competition at the National Eisteddfod; 1973 winner of the Portraits of Welsh People competition at the National Eisteddfod; 1985 Welsh Arts Council Travel Grant to study Standing Stones throughout Europe.

Commissions: 1996 Shakespeare Institute commission to paint any Shakespearean character - Owain Glyndwr; 1997 commission from Robert McKee/Los Angeles & from Beti George and David Parry Jones; 1998 further commission from the Shakespeare Institute.

exhibitions abroad: 1968/9 three exhibitions in Germany i.e. Duesseldorf, Mannheim, Oldenburg; 1970/80 UNESCO travelling shows in Germany & France; 1993/4 exhibition in France e.g. Euro Celtic exh. in Lorient/Brittany; exhibited in San Francisco.
