Artist's Statement: "The body as a form is full of expression and dynamics. I use this to explore feelings and sensations, examining the moulding of the
female form through issues that conform, constrict and represent the body as lived today. My work deals with notions of beauty. It magnetically draws in
or repels the viewer through the encounter with surface, tactility. I work mainly in 3-D, using clay and plaster but also consolidate the form in 2-D,
drawing the way the body, as a whole, communicates through visual language. I show with two groups, ‘fourchette’ and ‘issues’, as well as showing
individually".
Sue Roberts is interested in the response evoked and the relationship that takes place within the action of drawing. Using what is seen and unseen redefines
the figure in space into the realm of the imagination. Exploring themes of gender and the social expectation in being female, Sue Roberts’ work centres on
the theme of woman and the myths of the modern female. 'Mother' plays an important part in this scheme linking the past, present and the future.
