Nigel Talbot was born in 1952 in Taunton, Somerset. Between 1970 and 1976 he studied sculpture at three British art colleges: Derby College of Art, Newport College of Art Gwent, and Glasgow School of Art. Since 1978 he has had a studio in Wales to which he kept returning after his long sojourns into Europe and artist residencies in various places in the UK. In 1985 he gained an art- teacher's qualification (PGATC) at the then known Cardiff Institute of Higher Education (now UWIC). Thereafter, he taught in schools in Wales, especially at Caldicot Comprehensive School until 1997 when he worked exclusively as a resident or commissioned artist. Since 2000 he has been based in Cardiff. He has also lectured at numerous colleges in the UK and the USA as a visiting artist.
Artist's Statement: After the years of study, sculpture became a passion not by choice but just by looking and doing. On leaving Glasgow School of Art the only decision that I did not have to make was whether to keep making sculpture. The only problem was how? The answer lay in the succession of jobs that financed the upkeep of a studio for the next nine years. Buider's labourer, ring-boy in a circus, chocolate maker, mould maker in a foundry and being a Continental coach driver all financed my work as well as providing inspiring experiences. As a coach driver I was finding myself almost permanently in Europe and my studio practice was consequently suffering. Therefore, I made another casual decision, this time to become an Art Teacher. A symbiotic relationship developed where teaching art informed my own practice and my practice enhanced my teaching.
