Craig Wood was born in 1960 in Edinburgh, Scotland. In 1985/86 he took a Foundation Course at Dyfed College of Art, Carmarthen/Wales. From 1986 to 1989 he studied Fine Art at Goldsmith College of Art, London. He has since settled in Wales and has his studio in West Wales. Artist's Statements: (as quoted by J.Watkins in 'Craig Wood', 2002, pp.5 & 13) For his When Ideas become Pattern installation consisting largely of wallpaper designs Wood says: "I chose buildings that were to do with a Welsh culture that has gone or been removed. The chapel culture has gone because of Charles Darwin probably. The mines have gone because of multinational capitalism. The culture that grew up around them has disappeared. I chose farms because perhaps they're the next to go. That's why I've titled it When Ideas Become Pattern"
and later: "I make a lot of work in response to particular situations. In this respect, my work about my family is site specific - not about pattern in the floor [or on the wall] but rather about having two children, living in Wales, about what it's like living in the world now. The site-specificity is about context rather than format".
Jonathan Watkins remarks in a note: "Concerning the development of Wood's art practice, an interesting comparison is with the difference between the earlier minimal and later figurative paintings of American artist Philip Guston".Awards: 1993-94 Faber Castell Fellowship, Kunsthalle Nuernberg/Germany; Art History Dept. University of Warwick in Venice/Italy; 1996 DAAD Fellowship Berlin/Germany; 1997-2000 Gregory Fellow in Sculpture Leeds University/UK; 2003 winner of the Richard&Rosemary Wakelin Purchase Award (Glynn Vivian Art Gallery).
