The MABINOGION / Y MABINOGI continued.

The Mabinigion characters interpreted below:

From the book Branwen Daughter of Llyr:
Bendigeidfran/Brân son of Llır (see Iwan Bala) was king of all Britain. One day he was approached by the king of all Ireland, Matholwch, for the hand of his daughter Branwen. The tragic story tells of Branwen being caught up in the treachery between the opposing parties. She is taken to Ireland where she is ill-treated. A terrible war ensues between Wales & Ireland. Eventually, Branwen returns to Britain where she dies of a broken heart because she believes that the terrible devastation in both countries was caused by her.

Rhiannon and Pwyll (see Richard Oliver) outwitted Gwawl son of Clud and caught him in a bag (Gwawl had demanded that Rhiannon sleep with him). Pwyll and Rhiannon called upon their companions to play a practical joke on Gwawl. As they rushed into the hall every man struck a blow upon the bag and asked, 'What is here?', 'A badger' they replied. Each one asked 'What game are you playing thus?' and the reply was 'The game of Badger in the Bag'. This is how the game came about (Gwyn & Thomas Jones The Mabinogion, 1947/2000).

From the book Culhwch and Olwen:
Mabon son of Modron (see Ivor Davis / J.M.Morris / Shirley Jones) was taken away from his mother when only "three nights old". He becomes the best huntsman around, but his whereabouts are unknown. Culhwch needs Mabon to hunt the boar, Twrch Trwyth, because its tusks are the key to the hand of Olwen, Ysbaddaden's daughter, whom Cylhwch desires. Mabon is imprisoned in Caer Loyw from whence Culhwch and his companions free him. Eventuelly, they kill the boar and obtain the tusk, which is part of the agreement to win Olwen.
